Evangelical Pentecostal Church - Varna is a protestant church, founded in 1921 by
Russian missionaries
.
The first leader of the church in Varna, though she was not an ordained
minister, was the mother of Yoncho Dryanov a lady called Sijka Dryanova.
A woman of strong will and great potential, she attracted people from the streets to come
and hear the Good News of salvation. Together with her husband Nikola they built a hall in
the yard of their house, where they held the first meetings of the young church. Sijka lead
the church for 17 years and set an incredible example of Christian character and dedication.
In Evangelical Pentecostal Church - Varna have ministered the pastors
Ioncho Drjanov, Joseph Kokonchev, Stoicho Stoev and presently Nikolay Kokonchev.
During the totalitarian regime her son Yoncho Dryanov, already a pastor of
the church, was put in prison for 13 years. He was sentenced together with other pastors after
an ostensibly faked trial where they were accused of being "American spies" - that is the way
the authorities "beheaded" the biggest evangelical churches.
Then years of great persecution
and torment for the believers began. The property of the church in the centre of the town was
confiscated. In spite of the persecution, the activities of the church did not stop and the
services continued in the outskirts of the town.

The biggest growth of the church was during the years immediately
after the coming of democracy in Bulgaria: 1990-1993.
Then in 1992 the old property in the centre of the city was restituted and a new modern
building was made with about 600 seats.
The church is a part of the world Pentecostal movement called
(Assemblies of God)
- which is considered to be the largest protestant
movement in the world. In Bulgaria it is a member of the Pentecostal
Denomination, registered in 1928 under the name of Alliance of Evangelical
Pentecostal churches in Bulgaria. All main Evangelical denominations
in the country are unified under the name
United Evangelical Churches
.
In its doctrines, EPC stands on the creed of the Protestant Reformation,
stated by Martin Luther in 1517 in Germany.
EPC - Varna is a modern church with a clear message, contemporary gospel
music and art ministry. The people in the church are predominantly of young or average age.
The goal of the church is to preach salvation through faith in God and His Son Jesus Christ,
as well to influence society for a change according to the standards of the Bible and Christ's
teaching.
